Rediscovering Identity: Returning to the Source

It has always been the plan of the enemy to sow the seeds of confusion and create an identity crisis, not just in individual lives but within the body of Christ as a whole. When we are hurt, vulnerable, or searching for validation, we often find ourselves longing to become something or someone other than what our Creator intended. It is a dangerous place to be when we forget who we are. Yet, even more perilous is forgetting ‘whose’ we are, forgetting who we belong to.

Daughters of Fire, to truly know who we are and who we were created to be, we must retrace our steps. We must return to the Source, the Creator, the One in whose image and likeness we were fearfully and wonderfully made. No self-help manual, no motivational speech, no societal movement, no cult, and no earthly leader, whether a prime minister or a preacher, holds the authority to define us. The authority rests solely with the One who has the blueprint for our lives, the One who formed us with intentionality and purpose.

For many years, I, like so many others, lived my life according to what I was taught. I dressed in a way that aligned with human expectations, styled my hair to match societal standards, and conformed to rules and regulations that were, at their core, not biblical. These expectations shaped me into an image I thought I was supposed to reflect, yet they led me further from the truth of who I was created to be.

The journey to rediscovering identity is not an easy one. It involves peeling back the layers of falsehoods we have internalized over time. These layers are often built up through years of living under the weight of others’ opinions, societal norms, and even our own self-imposed expectations. For some, it might be the desire to meet a parent’s unattainable standards; for others, the need to fit into a world that rewards performance, appearance, or conformity. Whatever the case, these layers distort our reflection and pull us away from the image of our Creator.

But God, in His tenderness and love, calls us back to Him. He invites us to lay down the identities that the world has imposed upon us and to embrace the identity He has lovingly crafted. In Him, there are no labels, no pretense, no striving for perfection. There is simply grace, a grace that washes over us and reminds us that we are His.

When we return to the Source, we begin to see ourselves anew. Scripture reminds us that we are not forgotten, that we are not accidents or afterthoughts. We are chosen, we are loved, and we are called by name. Our worth does not lie in our physical appearance, in our accomplishments, or in the approval of others. Our worth is rooted in the fact that we are children of God, heirs to His kingdom, and reflections of His divine image.

So, how do we begin this journey of rediscovery? It starts with surrender. Surrendering the lies we have believed and allowing God to speak truth into our hearts. It requires immersing ourselves in His Word, where we are reminded that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, that we are more than conquerors, that we are deeply loved. It involves prayer, honest, raw moments of communion with our Creator, where we allow Him to reveal the beauty of who we are in His eyes.

This process is not instantaneous. It is a step-by-step, layer-by-layer unveiling of the truth. There will be moments of discomfort as we let go of the identities we have clung to for so long. But as each falsehood falls away, we are filled with a deeper understanding of our purpose and calling. We begin to reflect holiness, truth, and love, the very attributes of the One who made us.

Daughters of Fire, if you feel lost, if you look in the mirror and struggle to recognize the person staring back, know this: You are not forgotten. You were created with intention, with love, and with a purpose that only God Himself can define. Let Him heal the wounds that have shaped your perception of yourself. Let Him strip away the weight of expectations that were never meant for you to bear. Let Him remind you of the reflection you were always meant to carry, that of your Creator.

In His hands, there is no reflection more beautiful. There is no identity more fulfilling. There is no calling more significant than the one He has uniquely placed on your life. Return to the Source, and let Him show you who you are meant to be. Daughters of Fire, I love you, but Jesus loves you best!

  1. I love this series! It’s very much needed and timely for me. As women, and believers in general, we need an awakening about who we are in Christ, who He’s called us to be and step away from seeking validation through performance Christianity.
